The simulated analog shutoff carried out across 12 stations in Orlando, Florida came off with nary a hitch this past week. For the benefit of viewers, the stations broadcast a 10-second long pass/fail message for analog and digital viewers, respectively. The two Cox stations in the group, WFTV and WRDQ, reported that only 501 viewers called in to register their outrage at the brief interruption. Fully 146 of those calls came from analog Comcast customers who are fed a retransmitted OTA analog broadcast of WFTV. The second most popular group of complaints, 123 callers, were legitimate, though — older Televisions that pick up OTA-only. All stated, it’s a pretty good sign that the world will still be turning come February 18th.

Even though we just know you’ll disregard this information until the last possible moment, we’d like to point out that three more digital-to-analog converter boxes have been reviewed over at Sound & Vision. The $60 Zenith DTT900 — one of the very first DTV boxes to get outed — was pit against the $50 RCA DTA800 and the $60 Digital Stream DTX9900. Believe it or not, reviewers actually found quite a bit of difference in the three units ranging from looks (clearly) to on-screen interfaces. If you’re one to care about the minutiae (and admit it, you are), head on over to see which of these three most deserve your $40 voucher.

The VMAX Plus3 might be just the thing for home theater builders looking to set it and forget it, but what about projectionists on the run? Elite Screens’ $2,199 Kestrel should be just the thing, as it comes in a highly portable package that enables users to erect a screen from the floor up with the press of a remote. Available in both 84- / 100-inch versions in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios, these screens boast a “mechanized cross-rising apparatus is driven by a tubular motor,” and the built-in 5-12V projector trigger should come in handy as well. So much for taking the top-down approach, huh?

Hey, someone has to take care of Planet Earth’s insatiable appetite for LCD, right? Samsung is once again looking to expand its LCD manufacturing operations in China, this time by investing around $500 million to erect a new facility for cranking out the seemingly successful 82-inch panel (among others). Reportedly, the plant will eventually be used to pump out 40-, 46-, 57-, 70- and 82-inch LCD panels in order to “satisfy the robust market stipulation,” but there’s no word given on how soon product will begin to ship from its doors.

Sony just released a rambling update to it corporate strategy through fiscal year 2010. An interesting read for fans and competitors alike as Sony lays bare initiatives intent on moving Sony from recovery to the “leading global provider of networked consumer electronics and entertainment.” Most notable in the near-term however, is word from Kazuo Hirai, chieftain of Sony Computer Entertainment, that Sony will make a movie download service available to US PlayStation 3 owners this summer — Japan and Europe at later dates with details coming “next month,” presumably at E3. Moreover, Sony expects its gaming business to achieve profitability by March 2009, the end of the current fiscal year. Of course, we already knew that Sony was prepped to deliver full-length TV shows and movies sometime in 2008 via its North American PLAYSTATION Network. But summer, eh? Judging by the increased molecular agitation of sidewalk effluence, we’d say that Sony’s season of movie downloads is already upon us.

Actually, we’re being too kind. It hits every price point except the one below “absurdly inflated.” For whatever reason, Black Rhodium figures it can get away with launching a pricey new line of HDMI cables that are “engineered for optimum performance at every price point,” yet the cheapest one is a full

If you’ve already dumped coin on NuVo Technologies’ Grand Concerto or Essentia E6G multi-room audio system, you might as well cough up a tiny more to snag this puppy. The newly announced NuVo Music Port is a hardware / software package that enables “home desktop and laptop Computers to act both as sources and as controllers” in either of the aforesaid systems. Essentially, the device transforms a PC into a multi-output source for a NuVo system and enables any web-connected device on the home network to double as a media controller. The software end of the deal tosses in a swank browser interface that includes cover art and the like, and just so you know, it can be added to existing systems or installed with new ones. Hit the read link for all the gory details.

Uh oh, DXG’s creeping its way up into luxury territory. Earlier this year, we saw the outfit dish out a craptacular $149 HD camcorder, and just a few months back we were introduced to the $169 DXG-569V. Now, it’ll take another Hamilton in order to rightfully claim its newest unit, the DXG-567V. The pocket-friendly cam is available in four different hues, ships with rechargeable AA batteries and uploads directly to YouTube and other video sharing sites without much hassle at all. DXG claims that this bugger captures video at 1,280 x 720 (30fps), but even at $179, we’ve our doubts about the overall quality. Superior watch out though, by this time next year you’ll see DXG perched up beside Sony, Panasonic and the rest of the respected gang.

By the press release, it’s officially official — Pioneer has made good on its promise to get serious about LCDs, even though its intentions to bring out a 46-inch class display this year remain murky. Europe will see three new Kuro-branded LCDs: the KRL-32V and KRL-37V models (32-, 37-inch sizes, respectively) in August, and a 46-inch KRL-46V which still has a nebulous “later in the year” date. All models include a high-contrast filter up front, three HDMI ports and 100Hz processing (count on 120Hz if when released in the USA). No pricing has been announced, so we’ll be curious to see what sort of markup is slapped on the Sharp-sourced panel. More interesting, of course, will be the picture quality — have Pioneer elves worked any magic into the electronics, and will the LCD’s black levels measure up to the Kuro name?

Say hello to this year’s warmed-over line of Sony’s ES 7.1 channel audio/video receivers. Now-standard features in the line include a PS3/PSP-style xross media bar interface, 1080p Faroudja DCDi upconversion, a slew of audio codec support (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, dts High Resolution Audio and dts HD Master Audio) plus Digital Media Port connectivity to hook up iPod or Bluetooth adapters or satellite radio. The higher end STR-DA4400ES (above) packs a 120-watt amplifier, six HDMI inputs, HD video output to two zones and audio to three zones for $1,500 when it debuts this August. The STR-DA3400ES and STR-DA2400ES both include a 100-watt amp, four HDMI jacks, the 3400 includes an IR repeater and support for a second video zone with its $1,000 price tag, while the 2400 drops those features and includes a basic interface for $800 next month. Take a peek at both after the break, then check your wallet to see where you fit in.
